Standards:
-Danielson Group Framework 1B (The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.)
-InTASC Standard 1 (The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.)
Learning Objective:
Teachers will be able to dramatize student and teacher interactions when ELLs require language acquisition strategies to make the content comprehensible to demonstrate that they understand what these strategies are and when to use them.
Learning Strategies:
The instructor will guide the teachers/learners through a discussion of pages of text. These pages will be loaded into Google Drive so the teachers can make notes as they listen and discuss with the whole group and with their teams. I will call volunteers up to share. They are currently found at the following page: http://www.scsk12.org/scs/subject-areas/esl/PDFs/ESLStrategies.pdf
Once all the strategies have been discussed, I will show the following video I created on Animoto. http://animoto.com/play/tSyiAP1pgI9IucbvxdpdYQ
After the video, learners will work in groups to create role plays of specific teaching and learning strategies they might use to help ELLs in their classrooms. They will use one person’s phone to record the videos then upload them to YouTube. The instructor will show the videos at the end of the group work. Each team will need to create two segments in the same clip.
Sample of Student Work:
Assessment:
Each team will be assigned to evaluate the team that is clockwise from them moving around the room. Teams will take notes on all the teams’ role plays. After all the teams have shared, the table groups will discuss how they plan to evaluate and score the table they are assigned to grade. Scores will be based on a 1-10 scale of effectiveness of the strategies. The instructor will rate each team, and the team who presents will also rate themselves. The instructor will average the 3 scores for a final score.
